Robert Griffin Named Rg3, Washington Redskins rookie QB, Robert Griffin III was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month on Thursday, October 4th, among several other honors he has been nominated for this week. This well-deserved accolade came a day after he was nominated for Rookie of the Week and also found himself making his first appearance at the No. 10 spot on ESPN.com Mike Sando’s weekly “MVP Watch” list.
Griffin’s selection makes this the second consecutive year that a Redskins player has earned the prestigious Rookie of the Month award for September. Last year, linebacker Ryan Kerrigan received Defensive Rookie of the Month honors, as well, piling on to the credits from his outstanding rookie year in 2011. The last time a rookie has won the Offensive Rookie of the Month award in Washington is dated back to 2000 when offensive tackle Chris Samuels won for the month of October.
This shouldn’t come as a shock to those who have tuned in every Sunday to watch the rookie in action.
Through the first four starts of his NFL career, Griffin has completed 86-of-124 passes (69.4%) compiling 1,070 yards with four touchdowns for a passer rating of 103.2.
Griffin leads the rookie quarterbacks in passing yardage, completion percentage and passer rating. Sunday, he joined Carolina’s Cam Newton as the second player in history to throw for 1,250 yards in the first five games of his NFL rookie season. He also became one of three players in NFL history to pass for more than 1,000 yards in the first four weeks of a rookie season alongside Newton and Miami’s Ryan Tannehill, who was also drafted in April along with Griffin.
His four rushing touchdowns are also tied for most in the league alongside Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris and Houston running back Arian Foster. The touchdowns also have tied him with Redskins greats, Joe Theismann and Eddie LeBaron for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season in Redskins history. As though the other accolades weren’t enough, having his name in the spotlight with these other Redskins greats sound like accomplishment enough.
Griffin is one of two NFC East QB’s, the other being Super Bowl QB Eli Manning, who came in at No. 8 this week on Sando’s “MVP Watch” list. Sando applauded Griffin’s fourth-quarter comeback victory Sunday over the Buccaneers noting that he’s ranked third in completion percentage, third in yards per attempt (8.6) and 16th in rushing yards. The Redskins rank third in yards per game in major thanks to Griffin.
On top of all of his accomplishments and accolades, Griffin has teamed up with Adidas for a new sock line that recently came out that can be purchased in stores. For those of you who are Redskins fans or just RG3 fanatics in general- you can buy his burgundy and gold “Stay Humble” socks, which describes him perfectly, that he wears on game days and have your very own piece of RG3.
I believe Griffin absolutely has the potential to be the league’s MVP. However, to make that happen, the team as a whole needs to step it up if they want to continue this season as a successful one. The secondary needs to get their act together before they find themselves lower on the charts as far as points allowed, thus far. And as always, the injury-prone team strikes again and the Redskins are without some of their key players. Luckily, Pierre Garcon will find himself back in the mix as Griffin’s go-to receiver.
